Drawing Flies 52: Week 10 McGinty

Here is my entry for the week. I realized just after kicking off the drawing that my kids had misplaced my white pencil so I had to improvise. I was able to quickly find a white out correction pen, which I used for the highlights on the hook and head, and part of the wing tip, but then it ran out of fluid.  I was forced to raid the crayon box and finished it with a white crayola.  So this is a colored pencil (and some other stuff) on matte board drawing.  Also unfortunate is the fact that my scanner made the image look streaky, so ignore that part.

Kate decided to give this week’s fly a go and again another cute bug from her.

Drawing Flies 52: Week 9 Lefty’s Deceiver

Another all digital offering for this week’s fly.  This was drawn in Window’s Paint to get the old-school pixel look of a video game.  I limited myself to the default 28 color set and in some cases drew in pixel-by-pixel, especially the shading and highlights on hook and head.  Not much else to say here.

Drawing Flies 52: Week 8 Partridge and Orange

This is an admittedly weak effort in my opinion.  I was trying again for something Charlie Harper-like, but I think I missed.  This is an all digital image again.

Drawing Flies 52: Week 7 Hex Dun – The Leaden Mayfly

I need to play catch up this week (and probably next) to get back on schedule with the others drawing flies weekly.  The challenge for week 7 was to draw a hexagenia dun.  It made me think back one of my earliest fly tying masterpieces, the deadly, Leaden Mayfly.  There is a back story to this fly which you can read here.  This image tries my best to document and lampoon that fly I tied so many years ago.  The fly is a pencil sketch that I scanned into Fireworks where I added the text.  I think this might make a funny t-shirt.

Drawing Flies 52: Week 6 Muddler Minnow, Part 2

My 5 year old daughter wanted to try her hand at this week’s fly, the muddler minnow.  She opted for a sparse design.  I am guessing she is planning to use it for some winter steelheading.  Way to go kiddo!

Drawing Flies 52: Week 6 Muddler Minnow

This week’s drawing is the classic streamer pattern, the muddler minnow.  My rendering this week is completely digital.  I used Adobe Fireworks to do everything.  I started off wanting to do something Charlie Harper inspired, but ended up going this route instead.  I am pretty happy with it and will confess that it took closer to 30 minutes to draw.Update:Here is Jeff’s drawing for the week.  A very cool charcoal rendering.Update 2:Here is Jason’s drawing for the week. Really cool effects with what looks like water color and charcoal.

Drawing Flies 52: Week 5 Flashback Pheasant Tail

This week’s entry is the flashback pheasant tail.  I will admit that I cheated and turned the reins over to my 5 year old daughter to work her magic.  In all I think she did a great job!  Her picture features both a top view as well as a side profile view.  She is quite a little artist! Here are the entries from Jeff Kennedy and Jason Borger.

Drawing Flies 52: Week 4 The Boss

I should have drawn a fly with a flannel shirt and a guitar to make it look the THE Boss, but I’ve never been a big fan of Bruce Springsteen so instead I just drew the traditional pattern.  This started out as an ink drawing and then I got the wild (read dumb) idea to color this digitally and scanned it.  So I have to admit that I cheated on this one as it took me a lot longer than the allotted 20 minutes.  Well, I’ll make up for it in the next one and try and draw it in 20 seconds or something.  Here is my entry for week 3:Here are the entries from Jeff Kennedy and Jason Borger.

Drawing Flies 52: Week 3 Tarpon Fly

Here is my drawing for the week. High resolutionHere is Jeff Kennedy’s piece.  I like the drama and energy – the very definition of tarpon fishing – his colors give this painting. Jason has a nice drawing with ink and wash.  I like the sketch a lot.

Crashing the party

I have been following the blogs of Jeff Kennedy and Jason Borger for about a year now.  They are both renowned artists, Jeff specializes in flies and I think Jason does lots of different things including writing.  Anyway, I know neither of them personally but saw that they are doing a thing together they call Drawing Flies 52, drawing one fly per week for the coming year.  Jeff has the rules posted here.  I wasn’t really invited to join in the fun, nor would I expect to be, but I thought it sounded cool so I thought I would ride along.  I don’t presume to be on the same level of skill as either of them, but enjoy doodling trout and flies so hopefully they won’t mind if I draw along.  Coincidentally, Jason’s dad Gary Borger, was one of my first fly fishing tutors, well he was a virtual tutor anyway.  I used to check out his fly fishing videos, Fly Fishing For Trout with Gary Borger and Nymphing from the library as often as I could talk mom into taking me there. So without further ado, here are my two entries so far:Week 1: The Mickey Finn: Jeff,  JasonWeek 2: The Humpy: Jeff, JasonWe’ll see how long I can keep this up :)
