First fly: part 1
| Size 20 Brassie |
Tonight I spent some time with my 9-year old son in an effort to introduce him to fly tying. His first fly was a size 20 brassie tied with copper wire. He has been asking me for a few weeks to show him how so I figured I better get on it before he stops asking. There are probably few flies better suited to beginners than the brassie. There isn’t much to it, a hook, thread, copper wire, and a small tuft of dubbing. We used some peacock colored synthetic dubbing to build the head.

As you can see in this photo he is pretty proud of his creation. He is going to let me take one of the two that he tied with me fishing on Wednesday, so hopefully the follow up post will have some good photos of the trout I catch with it. Stay tuned.
